West Michigan:

Strong Partnerships, Stronger Connections

New Day Foundation for Families, in collaboration with 22 hospitals and cancer centers in West Michigan, has awarded more than $1.3 million in direct support to cancer patients and their families in the region for housing, transportation, utilities, food, gas, and insurance.

New Day is Michigan’s only nonprofit providing financial and emotional support, plus resource navigation to families navigating any type of cancer, anywhere in the state. We collaborate with 120 cancer centers statewide — from rural clinics to major health systems —directly impacting the lives of patients, caregivers, spouses and children. Annually, 15% of New Day’s program spending is allocated to 13 counties in West Michigan. We’re eager to build awareness and raise funds to continue our impactful and collaborative work in the region.

Four Core Programs

Financial Assistance

New Day pays critical living expenses for families with a cancer patient in active treatment. Payments are made directly to creditors for mortgage/rent, utilities, insurance and transportation.

Emotional Support

New Day has curated a trusted network of licensed professional counselors who offer 1:1 mental health support to patients and Immediate family members.

Grocery and Gas Support

New Day provides various food and gas assistance options, ensuring that families have healthy food on the table and gas in the tank to get to treatment.

Resource Navigation

Our team helps families access resources to provide a continuation of support that is more than a link to a website - it’s knowing what a family needs and how to make sure they are connected in a meaningful way.

New Day’s History

New Day Foundation for Families is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit co-founded in 2007 by Michigan couple, Michael and Gina Kell Spehn. They established the foundation in memory of their late spouses, Matt and Cathy, who each lost a valiant battle with cancer and left behind five young children. Michael and Gina blended their families and shared the origins of New Day and their personal story of faith, hope and love in a NY Times bestselling memoir and Hallmark Original Movie by the same name, The Color of Rain.
