September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
When a young child is diagnosed with cancer, the entire family’s world changes overnight. For seven-year-old Luca and his family, that journey began in 2023 when he was suddenly hospitalized and diagnosed with leukemia.
Since then, he has spent more than a year undergoing treatment, including frequent hospital visits, chemotherapy and procedures that have taken a toll on his young body. At one point during treatment, he lost the ability to walk and had to work hard in physical therapy to regain his strength. Today, he continues treatment with periodic chemotherapy infusions and physical therapy to recover.
Despite everything, there are bright spots. He has recently been able to return to school, something he missed greatly during treatment. Being back in the classroom with friends has brought a renewed sense of joy and normalcy to his life.
Behind the scenes, his parents have made enormous sacrifices to care for him. Both parents have had to take significant time away from work throughout his treatment, resulting in major income loss.
While the family has done everything possible to stay afloat, even relying on help from relatives, the financial strain has been significant as medical appointments, time off work and household expenses continue to pile up. Even as the medical toll of cancer eases, the financial burden continues to follow most families.
New Day stepped in to help ease the burden by assisting the family with their bills, giving them one less bill to worry about as they focus on their child’s recovery and the hope of a more normal routine ahead.
